“It’s not Victoria Station or Grand Central, but the North Pole Depot bustles with an excitement all its own. Passengers disembark from snug coaches into the crisp, Arctic sunlight. Elfin Mages from Africa and the Far East as well as Nisse from Scandinavia join other travelers from all points South, anxious to reunite with family and friends. Reindeer paw the snowy ground and harnesses jingle as a taxi awaits its next fare.
Even Santa is here today, welcoming his old friend from Italy, La Befana, who, in her homeland, performs a similar service to that of St. Nick. Riding her broomstick and carrying her basket, she flies from house to house, distributing gifts to deserving children. At least once a year they try and make time in their busy schedules for another annual visit, one with each other. The two kindred spirits will soon be toasting cups of hot cocoa and cappuccino in front of a crackling fire, trading stories of Christmas Eves gone by, and sharing helpful hints for those to come.” —SG
