“The image of an Organ Grinder and his monkey has always intrigued me and immediately conjures up street scenes of a bygone era. When I decided to paint my own version of this iconic duo, I realized that the familiar version of a man and his pet monkey shows, in scientific terms, a highly evolved, advanced primate with a somewhat less advanced primate companion. That led me to the idea of casting the Organ grinder as a Patas monkey and his assistant as an amazing little creature known as a Tarsier, which, on the evolutionary scale rates as one of the more primitive primates. That's the technical explanation behind the image, anyway... but mainly I just thought they'd be a fun pair to paint, and they were!”—SG

“It's not often that I revisit a subject, but when I was approached to do a piece inspired by one of my Peter Pan images, this one came to mind and was enjoyable to work on.
Peter Pan might stay young forever, but I believe the model who posed as Peter back in the mid-80’s is probably now in his mid 50's!" —SG
